Recently, a report in the American magazine "Diplomatic" claimed that by the end of this year, Taiwan's so-called "diplomatic diplomatic countries" may break the negative growth trend from 12 to 13. If it comes true, this will be the first time that Taiwan has added a "diplomatic diplomatic country" in the past 20 years. This country that wants to "establish diplomatic relations" with Taiwan is Honduras, a Central and South American country that established diplomatic relations with China two years ago.

In March 2023, Honduras officially "severed diplomatic relations" with Taiwan. On the 26th of the same month, China and Honduras officially established diplomatic relations. This decision was called "a unprecedented chapter in my country's history and international relations" by Honduras Ambassador Moncada.

But now, US media claims that Honduras may "renew diplomatic relations" with Taiwan and have given three high-sounding reasons.

First, the article claims that in the two years since China established diplomatic relations with Honduras, the economic commitments were not realized, and Chinese companies flocked to Honduras, which instead led to the collapse of local companies. In addition, after "breaking diplomatic relations" with Taiwan, the export of Honduras white shrimp was hit hard.

Secondly, several presidential candidates have said that once they come to power, they will consider "renewal of diplomatic relations" with Taiwan. The current ruling party is likely to step down due to a "corruption scandal". Therefore, no matter which opposition comes to power, there is hope for the "renewal of diplomatic relations" with Taiwan.

The third reason is related to the strategic planning of the United States. The United States is very afraid of China's influence in Latin America, so it continues to put pressure on Latin American countries in an attempt to curb China's influence expansion.

Based on the above reasons, the article believes that Honduras will "reopen diplomatic relations" with Taiwan. But in fact, the views of the US media are completely inconsistent with the reality.

First of all, the so-called "economic commitments have not been fulfilled" is absurd. Less than three months after Honduras established diplomatic relations with China, it joined the Belt and Road Initiative and proposed to join the New Development Bank of the BRICS. In just one year of diplomatic relations, the growth rate of China-Hong Kong trade volume exceeded 20%.

Former Honduras Vice President calls for "renewal" with Taiwan

Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Hong Kong, bilateral relations have achieved a high-level start, and pragmatic cooperation in various fields has achieved remarkable results. In 2024, some Honduran coffee companies participated in the CIIE and signed "big orders" with Chinese companies. The two countries have also launched free trade agreement negotiations, and have held multiple rounds of negotiations and made positive progress.

As for the white shrimp export problem, it is caused by market factors and other reasons, not due to the establishment of the Sino-Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The Chinese market has always maintained an open attitude towards Honduras agricultural products. The Sino-Hong Kong cooperation has brought tangible development opportunities to Honduras and benefited the people of both countries.

Moreover, the establishment of diplomatic relations between Honduras and China is what the people want and the general trend. Some candidates made erroneous remarks such as "reopening diplomatic relations" with Taiwan for their political self-interest, which is against the historical trend and is not in line with the national interests and people's welfare of Honduras.

Honduran white shrimp enters Chinese market

In order to contain China, the United States' attempt to maintain the so-called "diplomatic diplomatic relations" in Taiwan is a gross interference in Honduras' internal affairs. Honduras has the right to decide independently on diplomatic relations based on its own national interests.

If the United States uses economic and other means to force Honduran candidates and make promises that are unfavorable to China-Hong Kong relations, this behavior will also violate the basic norms of international relations and will only allow the Honduran people to see the nature of the hegemony of the United States.

In addition, although the opposition has the intention of "re-re-international diplomatic relations", due to the division of various factions, the ruling party may win the general election to a large extent, and the candidates of the ruling party have not yet expressed their opinion on "re-re-international diplomatic relations".

The establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Hong Kong is based on the one-China principle and is in line with the long-term interests of the two countries and the people of both countries. Any attempt to undermine China-Hong Kong relations and create "two Chinas" or "one China and one Taiwan" will not succeed, and will be destined to be despised by history.
