"Father Of Shock Therapy" Jeffrey Sachs: China Should Not Copy The American Model

What is certain is that China should not copy the US model, at least it is not possible now, because the United States itself has to make great adjustments. China definitely does not want to copy all the problems of the US after copying this model, right? so

Let’s summarize the relationship between China and the United States.

Why is there a problem now, how do we find the key to solve this problem? From China's perspective, as I just mentioned, every country in the world should cooperate at the economic level in various ways. This kind of cooperation should be a three-in-one cooperation that combines growth, equality and the environment.

In 2015, 193 member states of the United Nations, including the United States, accepted the concept of "sustainable development" and adopted 17 SDG goals to be achieved at the summit, including promoting prosperity, promoting equality, and promoting environmental sustainable development. As we all know, governments have adopted the goals of the United Nations, but they may not necessarily take corresponding actions to achieve this goal. The US government is now completely unattended to these sustainable development goals. President Trump has a lot of other work, so he may pay more attention to it. We need a new government and hope that the new government can take different measures.

In principle, the challenges we are facing now are global. All countries should work together in line with this goal. Through cooperation, we can do a lot and accelerate progress together to truly achieve zero carbon emissions in energy consumption, use land in a more sustainable way, and truly realize the transformation of digital consumption.

In fact, there can be a variety of ways one country can provide support to another, but now the United States is launching an economic offensive against China. Fortunately, it is not deep, and has not caused much impact so far, but we should understand this attitude of the United States more clearly. The United States does not want China to compete with it, because the United States is already the most influential country in the world. Whether in politics, economy or technology, the United States has been ranked first in the world for at least the past 50 years, and this position has never been challenged from around 1950 to around 2000.

In the United States, the mentality of political leaders is that the United States should always be the world's leader and always rank first. They think that only this way can the world be fair. This is certainly a misunderstanding, and it is entirely out of a selfish mindset. Basically every country will feel that it is good. If a country is already the number one strong country, it feels that it should always be a strong country. The United States has been in a world power for 50 years, which has led to the American mentality. We should always be the world's number one and should not be challenged.

In 1991, the US-Soviet Cold War ended, and the Soviet Union collapsed and became 15 franchise republics. At this time, the United States believed that it had become the absolute number one power in the world. Economically, it is impossible for generations to come to be challenged in decades. Later, for American policy makers and the American public, it was quite surprising to see China's rapid rise, because after all, seeing China's economy develop so rapidly and technology develop so rapidly, Americans were surprised and almost reached the level of the United States.

In my personal opinion, this is actually a good thing, because it shows China's progress and is good news, which means that China's living standards have been further improved. In this way, we have an additional partner, and together with China, we can solve many problems, such as sustainable development, environmental problems, and poverty reduction problems.

Unfortunately, most people in the United States have the mentality of "God, China has become a major threat to us now" because it feels that China's economic size has surpassed that of the United States. The American mentality is that "how in just a few years, China has become a country on par with us, and suddenly becomes a threat to us." In the media, some people even describe China as the enemy of the United States.

In a few years, Americans' mentality towards China has changed like this. But this is mainly a psychological problem, not a real reality that exists in geopoliticality. Please remember that few Americans have actually come to China. Most Americans do not understand China and have not communicated face to face with Chinese people. Only a few elites have truly had contact with China.

Therefore, it is easy for policy makers to convince the public that China is our enemy now, and President Trump has such a problem. In his political propaganda, a basic point of view is that any problem that arises in the United States is caused by other countries, not my own. This mentality is very dangerous. Politicians on both sides say that the problem is not us, it is the other side, and the public believes it.

People often divide their camps in their hearts, either me or you. This mentality is actually quite dangerous, but this mentality exists now. So in the United States, basically every day I am trying to explain that China is not our enemy, but an equal country with us. China has not violated any rules, but is just seeking its own development. Moreover, China has done a very good job in development. We should cooperate more with China rather than compete more.

But the measures seen in the past few years, such as tariffs imposed by the United States, and the various practices adopted by the United States now hope to prevent Chinese technology from entering the US market, are largely due to the American mentality being bewitched and influenced by American politicians.

If everyone has received a good education and understands this situation, it should be promoted to more cooperation between China and the United States, which is very urgent. And we should promote more that there should be a friendly relationship between China and the United States and should not become a hostile relationship, because if there is hostility in the relationship between the two countries, it will be very dangerous for China and the United States, and it may go crazy or even eventually lose control. Just like the relationship between the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War, it is almost incompatible and incompatible, and it lasts for about 40 years. This is very dangerous for the world. We should try our best to avoid the bilateral relations between China and the United States from this point.

I hope that one way the tension between the United States and China can be alleviated is that China will play its own leadership in sustainable development and become a clear leader, saying "not only is we not a threat, but we also play the role of a leader in the world to solve the world's problems and help the world meet some of the most important challenges."

There is a major area that China can exert its leadership in my opinion, that is, the "Belt and Road" initiative, because the "Belt and Road" initiative is a Chinese project. Through the "Belt and Road", China hopes to cooperate with Asia and Europe to build modern infrastructure and strengthen connectivity. I think this is a good initiative and a noble initiative, but it seems that it is not very good to implement it now. If the "Belt and Road" is to be successful, the design and implementation of the project must be done very well. It cannot be said that a project will go bankrupt halfway through, or in the end, there is no way to ensure the quality of the service.

I would like to suggest that the Chinese government demonstrate sustainable development in the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative. For example, when China and neighboring countries are undergoing energy system transformation, my suggestion is not to vigorously develop coal-fired power, nor build natural gas pipelines, but to vigorously develop clean energy such as wind power plants, hydropower plants, solar power plants, etc., so that neighboring countries and the whole world can see this. This is the path to sustainable development in the 21st century. China will use its existing advanced technology to help countries along the Belt and Road, whether in Asia or Europe, obtain clean air, reduce its own pollution, use land in a more sustainable way, obtain high-quality digital technology services, and use energy clean and zero carbon emissions.

If it can be truly achieved, I believe it will be a great encouragement, which will allow the whole world to clearly see China's rise, not only because of the efforts of the Chinese, the hardworking, wisdom and frugality of the Chinese, but also China is also a disseminator of positive energy, which is beneficial to the world. In my opinion, China's rise is indeed beneficial to the world.

Thank you everyone!
