In 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed a major initiative to build the "Belt and Road". Over the past five years, the Belt and Road Initiative has transformed from concepts to actions, from vision to reality, and from solutions to results.

In 2014, actively responding to President Xi Jinping’s major initiative, the People’s Daily held the “Belt and Road” media cooperation for the first time, building an international cooperation platform for high-end dialogue and in-depth exchanges for countries and regions participating in the “Belt and Road”. The forum is held every year, with international cooperation becoming increasingly deep and global influence becoming increasingly greater. From October 29 to 30, the 2018 "Belt and Road" Media Cooperation Forum was grandly held in Boao, Hainan. Over the past four years, using the forum as a window, bridge and link, media, enterprises, think tanks and other countries have worked together to gather development wisdom, discuss development plans, solve development problems, and promote development cooperation, and cheer for the construction of the "Belt and Road".

President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the 2016 Belt and Road Media Cooperation Forum, pointing out that the media plays an irreplaceable and important role in information dissemination, enhancing mutual trust, and building consensus. The "Belt and Road" Media Cooperation Forum provides a platform for media dialogue, exchanges and practical cooperation among various countries. We hope that media from all countries will make good use of this platform and actively and effectively promote the development of national relations, communicate people's hearts and opinions, and deepen understanding and mutual trust, and play an active role in the construction of the "Belt and Road".

In 2014, 2015 and 2016, Liu Yunshan, then member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Central Secretariat, met with foreign representatives who came to China to participate in the "Belt and Road" Media Cooperation Forum for three consecutive years. In 2017, Zhang Gaoli, then member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier of the State Council, met with foreign representatives participating in the Belt and Road Media Cooperation Forum.

In 2014, 11 countries and 47 media organizations participated in the forum; in 2015, more than 60 countries and international organizations and nearly 140 mainstream media participated in the forum; in 2016, 101 countries and 212 foreign media participated in the forum; in 2017, 126 countries and international organizations and 265 foreign media participated in the forum; in 2018, 256 guests from 90 countries and international organizations and 205 media and institutions gathered in Boao, Hainan to attend the forum. At present, the Belt and Road Media Cooperation Forum has become the largest global media event hosted by mainstream Chinese media, with the largest scale, the most participating countries and international organizations, the most participating foreign media, the most representative and influential global media event.

There are new highlights every year

In 2014, 21 media representatives from 9 countries jointly signed the "Joint Declaration of the Media Cooperation Forum on the Silk Road Economic Belt" with 9 central media and 12 provincial party newspapers. In 2015, the People's Daily signed a "Memorandum of Understanding on Bilateral Cooperation" with 33 mainstream media in the world. In 2016, the multilingual "Belt and Road Global Media Cooperation Network" was launched, the "New Media Alliance of Countries Along the Belt and Road" was established, and the "Belt and Road Media Cooperation Forum Secretariat" was established, which was responsible for implementing various activities of bilateral and multilateral media cooperation. In 2017, the "Belt and Road" media cooperation blue book was released, and the People's Daily International Issue Research Center, the "Belt and Road" Regional Cooperation Alliance, the "Belt and Road" Cultural Center, etc. were established. In 2018, we planned and organized a cross-border joint interview on "Five Years of Silk Road" to discuss the establishment of the "Silk Road Award" for international communication, planned to open a "Belt and Road" media executive training class, planned to establish a "Belt and Road" media study abroad fund, and launched the "Silk Road Chapter - Report on the Communication and Construction Achievements of the Belt and Road" (Chinese and English bilingual version).

Interviews and exchanges are closely and frequently

The Secretariat of the "Belt and Road" Media Cooperation Forum actively implements various activities of bilateral and multilateral media cooperation, providing convenience for media from various countries to participate in exchanges and cooperation such as the "Belt and Road" theme interviews. The forum has enhanced the exchanges between the People's Daily and media from various countries, deepened mutual understanding and friendship. In the past five years, delegations from more than 200 foreign media and institutions have visited the People's Daily to exchange experiences and observe and discuss; the People's Daily has sent more than 100 batches and more than 1,000 people, including all-media exchange groups and special interview groups, and held nearly 200 seminars, dialogues and signing ceremonies around the world.

With the help of the "Belt and Road" Media Cooperation Forum, the People's Daily signed the "Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation" with 36 media from 26 countries, promoting information and resource sharing among media and establishing a news product exchange mechanism; keeping up with the wave of new technologies, it signed a new media and new technology cooperation agreement with 16 foreign media; it established the official website of the "Belt and Road" Media Cooperation Forum, and launched the "Belt and Road News Reporting Multilingual Service Cloud Platform", realizing all-media communication and providing interactive translation. From content exchange to technical collaboration, from traditional business formats to emerging media, from text works to video products, the People's Daily and media from various countries learn from each other, interact and help each other, the quality of cooperation continues to improve, the variety of cooperation continues to enrich, and the quality of cooperation continues to improve.

A long impact

Promote the construction of the Belt and Road

Through the "Belt and Road" Media Cooperation Forum, the People's Daily and media from various countries reached consensus through equality and mutual consultation, establishing mechanisms to promote exchanges and promoting cooperation with shared responsibilities. In July 2017, in Moscow, Russia, under the witness of President Xi Jinping and President Putin, the People's Daily and the Russian state news agency Tass Social exchanged a comprehensive cooperation agreement. The two sides will carry out extensive cooperation to create a good public opinion atmosphere for the development of the China-Russia comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

People's Daily and mainstream media in various countries have strengthened cross-border interview cooperation, and have organized joint interview activities such as the Lancang-Mekong region, ASEAN, China-Japan-South Korea, and China-Russia mainstream media. Through the joint efforts of Chinese and foreign media, the "Belt and Road" has become increasingly known, recognized and praised by countries around the world and people around the world.
